The stone granule finish softens the look of the steel. Details that matter on these roofs include ridge and hip trim, flashing at chimneys and the eave and rake edges.

The basics

What stone-coated steel roofing is

Each panel is formed steel with a coating and a layer of stone granules bonded to the surface. The panels are shaped to look like traditional roofing, such as the cottage-style shingle shown above, and they lock together across the roof.

Because the panels are steel, the roof is light and durable, and Westlake Royal lists a Class A fire rating for the system when installed with the specified underlayment. Because they are coated in stone, they do not look like a metal roof from the street.

Front Range hail

How stone-coated steel handles hail

Westlake Royal lists its Cottage Shingle with Class 4 hail impact resistance, and says it meets the FM standard for Very Severe Hail. It also lists a Class A fire rating when installed with the specified underlayment.

Those are lab ratings, and an honest answer includes the limits. Very large hail can dent steel panels or knock granules loose, even when the roof keeps shedding water.

Common questions

Weight and noise: what is true

Weight

Westlake Royal lists its stone-coated steel roofing at about 150 pounds per square (100 square feet). In the same comparison it lists heavyweight laminated asphalt shingles at about 305 pounds and tile, including concrete tile, at 600 to 1,100 pounds.

Noise

The common worry is rain noise. A stone-coated steel roof goes over solid decking and underlayment, not open framing like a barn, and the stone surface softens the sound of rain. Any roof is loud in a hard hail storm.

Inspections

Some jurisdictions, including the Town of Parker (per parkerco.gov), require a mid-roof inspection for stone-coated steel in addition to the final. We confirm the requirements for your address and plan for them in the schedule.

Approval and budget

HOA approval and cost

Many HOAs care about how a roof looks from the street. Stone-coated steel comes in shake, shingle and tile profiles, so it can often match the look a neighborhood expects. Some HOAs still require specific materials, so check your guidelines. We can provide the product details and colors your architectural committee asks for.

Some Colorado jurisdictions limit wood shakes or require Class A fire-rated roofing in wildfire areas, so check with your town or county (in Douglas County, douglasco.gov). Westlake Royal lists a Class A fire rating for its stone-coated steel when it is installed with the specified underlayment, so a shake profile is one way to get a shake look with a Class A rated product.

On cost, stone-coated steel usually runs higher up front than impact-resistant asphalt shingles. Against standing seam, the price depends heavily on roof design, panel choice and trim, so we are glad to price both.

Choose the right roof

Stone-coated steel vs. Class 4 shingles vs. standing seam

Stone-coated steel

  • Class 4 hail rating on Westlake Royal Cottage Shingle
  • Light weight, about 150 pounds per square per Westlake Royal
  • Shake, shingle or tile look that fits many HOAs
  • Higher cost than impact-resistant asphalt
  • Very large hail can still dent panels or loosen granules

Atlas Class 4 asphalt shingles

  • UL 2218 Class 4 on Atlas StormMaster and Pinnacle Impact
  • Usually lower cost than stone-coated steel or standing seam
  • Familiar look and simple repairs
  • Heavier than stone-coated steel per square

Standing seam metal

  • Clean, modern look with concealed fasteners
  • Sheds snow and water quickly
  • Hail dents show clearly on smooth panels
  • May not suit HOAs that expect a traditional look
  • Cost varies widely with panel and design

Common questions

Stone-coated steel FAQ

Can hail damage a stone-coated steel roof?

No roof is. Westlake Royal lists Cottage Shingle with a Class 4 hail rating, but very large hail can still dent panels or loosen granules.

Is a stone-coated steel roof loud in the rain?

Most of the noise worry comes from metal roofs on open framing. Stone-coated steel goes over solid decking, and the stone surface softens rain noise.

Will my HOA approve it?

Often, because it looks like shake, shingle or tile. Check your HOA guidelines, and we can provide the product details they ask for.

Do you install other stone-coated steel brands?

We install Westlake Royal stone-coated steel.

Does it need a permit?

Yes, a reroof needs a permit, and we pull it unless your contract says otherwise. Some jurisdictions, including the Town of Parker, also require a mid-roof inspection for stone-coated steel.
